I have put rice cereal in my child's bottles since they were 3 weeks old. It helped them to not spit up and to sleep better. As for my now 5 month old, I still put it in his bottles. Their doctor told me that it would not hurt him at all. They have both turned out to be very healthy, happy boys. |

I was told by my ped to never put cereal in a bottle. If your going to give it to them they need to be at least 6 months old and given it by spoon ______________________ @~>~~Jenny♥Juan=Jenelle~~<~@ In ♥ Since 2006 유 ♥ 웃 = 유 One Happy Family Since 2008 |

Yep I was all so told between 4 to 6 months you want to feed it to your lo's by spoon, Idk though everyone has different views on the subject. Considering theirs moms who do it at a month old, which really disturbs me. No offense to anyone who does it.. ______________________

I was also told 4-6 months as well. I personally wouldn't put rice cereal in a bottle though. I definitely don't think it should be done at only a month old though because the first few months are when you baby gains the most weight. Feeding a baby rice cereal in his/her bottle only leads to being overweight amongst other things that may lead to juvenile diabetes in my opinion. I believe that is one of the reasons why they tell you that you should wait until your child reaches 4-6 months once their weight gain has slowed down a bit. |

The reason you shouldn't give rice or any other food is because their digestive system isn't developed yet. It can also lead to food allergies. ______________________ @~>~~Jenny♥Juan=Jenelle~~<~@ In ♥ Since 2006 유 ♥ 웃 = 유 One Happy Family Since 2008 |

Same here. Our Pediatrician has a pamphlet in the office to why you're not suppose to put rice cereal or anything like that in a baby's bottle, not even for GERD. Also you're not suppose to give it until atleast 6 months. Some say 4 months, but there digestive tract isn't up to par yet at 4 months.
It is a myth that cereal helps babies sleep better. It doesn't. ______________________ Jenn- Mommy to Hunter 7/2/07 & Liev 4/15/10 - Wife to Brian Childbirth Educator & Placental Encapsulation Professional |

Before about six months of age, a baby's gut is not mature enough to handle anything but mother's milk (or a mother's milk substitute, known to us as "infant formula.") Giving anything else before the baby is mature enough can lead to allergies and to digestive problems. Having said that, some pediatricians do suggest adding a teaspoon of rice cereal per oz of formula to thicken the milk in cases of severe reflux. Giving cereal this way is not without risk; I would research it and make an educated decision if it were prescribed for my child. I would never add cereal for the purpose of trying to get a young baby to sleep longer at night. An unnaturally deep sleep puts a baby at greater risk for SIDS; some babies simply do not rouse and remember to breathe if they are sleeping more deeply than nature intended. I have seen certain baby formulas that have added thickeners which claim to make the baby sleep better, but I do not recommend them at all, and would never give them to a young baby. A baby does not need anything other than milk (as above) until around the middle of the first year, when he is able to sit up (while supported) and begins to reach for your food when you are holding him. Studies have shown that giving cereal early may increase both the risk of diabetes and celiac disease in suceptible babies. Cereal does not add much nutrition to a baby's diet, and it is not at all necessary to give baby cereals to your child, though one study did show that the introduction of grains later than about seven months may be connected to an increased risk of diabetes. Once he is ready, offering cooked vegetables and fruits, mashed or in pieces that he can hold and "chew" on, is a perfectly acceptable way to begin offering foods other than milk, and cereal can be introduced later if desired. |
