Metal detectors

My school has metal detectors that we have to walk through before we go into the school. Like the airport security-type ones. Are those harmful to my babies? Because there are pregnant girls at my school that still go through them and I've heard reports that the metal detectors give off small amounts of radiation. ______________________ Andi: Mommy of twins due Aug. 16, 2010 |

The amount of radiation given off by these devices is way too small to cause damage. there is no more risk than using a microwave oven (even though this is a different part of the ionising radiation spectrum). You can safely pass through them, if there were a risk then they would either not be able to have them in airports or there would have to be special precautions for pregnant women just like they do in the emergency room for the x-ray room. :~) (oops submitted before I had finished) So to clarify, although they do emit radiation, it is non-ionising which means it is safe and does not damage tissues. |

Pregnant women go through airport detectors every single day. I really wouldn't worry about it. ______________________ ~*Shana*~

Here is an answer to your question from "Ask the Experts" at http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q1499.htmlThis would hold true for the metal detectors used at schools, courthouses, and other places where crowds gather.
"Ask the Experts"Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Power lines, magnets, computers, airport screening, cell phones The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
My wife is pregnant and we are traveling for the holidays. I saw your answer to the pregnant woman about her concerns about the security radiation. You say it is harmless. My questions: What kind of radiation is it? How do those walk-through devices work?
A
There are two screening devices at the airport. One is an x ray machine that looks at your luggage. That machine is well shielded and exposes no one to any significant exposure to x rays—neither the workers or the passengers. The other apparatus is a metal-detecting device that is nonionizing electromagnetic "radiation." That exposure has no reproductive effects that should concern your wife. There are no measurable effects from this exposure to the embryo. Of course I cannot remove the background risk of 15% miscarriage and 3% birth defects that all normal pregnant women face." Robert L.
