diabetes and pregnancy

Topics: 15   Posts: 19

I had a doctors appointment yesterday and this doctor says she thinks I have developed diabetes while being pregnant... I already took one glucose test and passed and now I have to get another done. Well, my mother has a BP meter to test your blood sugar and I'm wondering, what are the normal levels? I just took mine like 10 minutes ago and it was 169...

169 is high. My husband is diabetic and his sugar isn't suppose to be over 100 per his endocrinologist!

I went for my first suger test on Tusday and I got the test back and they told me that it was really high. I asked them what it was and they told me that it was 176. So I guess is high but I really have never had a problem with it before. It really scared me being a first time mom and all. Also not really nowing what is going to happen. They told me I have to go next Tusday to get the 3 hour on done so I guess I will be doing that. I hope I PASS it! I am so scare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had gestational diabetes and I wasn't suppose to go over 115 or under 60. Having gestational diabetes sounds scary but it really isn't. All you have to do is watch your carbs and sugar and most of the time women can control it with diet, exercise and medication. It usually goes away after pregnancy is over. It just sucks because you have to really watch what you eat. Just start watching. what you eat right away. stay away from high carbed food and extra sugar that includes fruit. most docs will send you to a nutritionist if they don't bring that up in the doctors office ask them if you can see one. They will help you figure out a meal plan and explain your food intake better. If you have any questions about it you can always ask me too.

Actually you will want to watch out in the future. The diabetic counselor I talked to in the hospital after I found out I had GD said that people who get GD are more likely to get diabetes in the future so she said to make sure I always watch my weight and always try to watch my diet.

According to    ASK,    (http://www.ask.com/bar?q=normal+blood+sugar+levels&page=1&qsrc=121&ab=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2FHEALTH%2Flibrary%2FSA%2F00102.html)
"What is a fasting blood sugar test?
A fasting blood sugar test measures the amount of sugar in your blood after you fast for at least eight hours or overnight.
What's normal?
A normal fasting blood sugar result is lower than 100 milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood (mg/dL).
What level suggests prediabetes?
If your fasting blood sugar level is 100 mg/dL to 125 mg/dL, you have impaired fasting glucose — commonly known as prediabetes. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may repeat the fasting blood sugar test several days to a week later.
What level suggests type 1 or type 2 diabetes?
A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher is consistent with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes when accompanied by classic signs and symptoms of diabetes — increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weight loss or blurred vision.
Random blood sugar test
What is a random blood sugar test?
A random blood sugar test measures your blood sugar at any point in time, not necessarily a certain amount of time after a meal, snack or beverage.
What's normal?
A normal random blood sugar level hasn't been clearly defined. However, even if you've recently eaten and your blood sugar level is at its peak, your random blood sugar level shouldn't be higher than 200 mg/dL.
What level suggests prediabetes?
If your random blood sugar level is higher than 140 mg/dL but lower than 200 mg/dL, you may have prediabetes.
What level suggests type 1 or type 2 diabetes?
A random blood sugar level higher than 200 mg/dL suggests either type 1 or type 2 diabetes"

If you have a random blood sugar (taken at any time of the day) or a pc blood suger (taken after a meal) that is elevated, the doctor will probably order a fasting blood sugar and possibly a glucose tolerance test to confirm the diagnosis of gestational diabetes. It is very important to follow your doctor's orders and the nutritionist's instructions to keep your blood sugar within normal range throughout the rest of your pregnancy. This will protect both you and your baby from the effects of high blood sugars. Most mothers who develop gestational diabetes return to normal blood sugar levels once the baby is born, though you will be at an increased risk of gestational diabetes in any future pregnancies.
