Why read to your baby?

Topics: 53   Posts: 2

Infants don’t understand what you are reading yet you speak to your child knowing he/she doesn’t understand you. So why not reading a book pointing at things in the book? Eventually with time your baby will be able to understand as you point at the pictures in the book. You can read books with lots of pictures at first and then as your baby grows start incorporating more words. The more stories you read the richer your baby’s vocabulary will be when he/she learns how to talk.  Lullabies and nursery rhymes will be of great interest to your child. Babies begin to understand pictures when they are 6 months old. By this time your baby will start showing some preference for some pictures as he/she stars understanding that these pictures represent objects. There might be a particular page your baby enjoys the most. Try focusing on what your baby likes. Your baby learns how to explore the world, acquires a taste for books, and an exquisite vocabulary. Also, simple vocabulary will be extremely helpful when your child gets sick. The more words your child learns the more you’ll learn about what’s going on with your baby. For instance, he/she might not be able to pronounce the word headache or fever * but you can teach your child to touch his/her forehead when one of these two symptoms occurs. With time if your child is learning good vocabulary from the books you are reading and the pictures you are showing he/she will be able to associate the stories in the books with real life events. It’s never wasted time reading to your baby…
