HELP! We're breastfeeding and sick.

Topics: 4   Posts: 13
My two year old daughter and I are both experiencing some serious clogged sinuses and sore throat lately, so much so that it has affected our sleep. In the past I would have just pumped the vitamin C, water, and tea until we recovered, while avoiding the general public to in order to keep our germs to ourselves, but now we're both in school and suffering due to discomfort and lack of sleep. She still nurses occasionally throughout the day and I'm wondering what types of OTC medicines are safe for me to take, and also for her to take. I've tried homeopathics, but they just don't seem to be working. Specifically I have a package of Aleeve cold and sinus in my cupboard that I've been eyeballing, and I was wondering about Children's Tylenol cold and sinus for her. It says ask a doc about children under 6. Thanks in advance.

"What is Aleve Cold and Sinus (Naproxen Pseudoephedrine)?

Naproxen is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Naproxen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).

The combination of naproxen and pseudoephedrine is used to treat stuffy nose, sinus congestion, cough, and pain or fever caused by the common cold or flu."

Both Naproxyn and Pseudoephedrine are considered by the AAP to be drugs that are usually compatible with breastfeeding; however, pseudoephedrine (which dries up nasal secretions), may also reduce the amount of milk you produce. I would use it but carefully, in only the limited amounts absolutely needed, and if your child complains about low milk supply, stop taking it.

As far as the Childrens Tylenol cold and sinus, I think it is safer to ask your doctor. They used to make a solution for infants, but it was pulled off the market because it caused some problems in young babies. You can try a saline mist nasal spray for both of you, and it may help with the stuffy nose symptoms. Hope you feel better soon.
