Nursing and nipple shape

Topics: 4   Posts: 13

Hi Nurse Anne!

I know you are a lactation consultant, so I thought I'd ask you a quick question.

As I've said before, I've been nursing my daughter for a little over two years and we are in the process of weaning. I know that my breasts will never be the same shape as they were before, but I was wondering about my nipples. They seem to have lengthened quite a bit, and I was wondering if you think they will ever shrink even a bit.

Thanks so much for your time!

Best,

Lindsey

You are right in thinking that your body will never be quite the same after having and breastfeeding your baby. There is really no way to tell exactly what changes will take place until you experience them. One thing, though. Contrary to what many people think, breastfeeding does not make your breasts saggy; it is the changes of pregnancy that do that. So hopefully nobody chooses not to breastfeed (thus putting her baby's health at risk) because she is afraid of changes to her breasts.:-) I am sure that your breasts will change once you complete the weaning process, but I really can't say specifically how much your nipples will revert back to what they were. Sorry I can't be more helpful with this. :-)

That's fine, and thanks so much for your time. For the record, I would do it over and over and over again! It is such a small price to pay for my baby's health, no matter what happens with my body. It's just a shell anyway.
