Your back can hurt from an epidural no matter what age you are or what # of pregnancy you are on. I think that's what you're asking? ______________________ Jenn- Mommy to Hunter & Liev, Wife to Brian Doula & Student Midwife |

The website above has a good discussion of the risks vs the benefits of epidural anesthesia in labor. As far as the risk of back pain following an epidural, it says:
"Short or long-term postpartum backache from bruising caused by the injection or from ligament strain caused by prolonged time spent in a damaging position or inappropriate movement (for example, extreme passive flexion of the mother's trunk, hips and knees during the second stage, or sudden vigorous movements of the mother) while her muscles are relaxed and her back is numb (up to 19%). Long-term backache is almost twice as likely to occur with an epidural than without."
If you are wondering about whether or not to have an epidural when you give birth, read the entire article, which is entitled, " Weighing the Pros and Cons of the Epidural." The article is by Penny Simkin |

My back hurt for a little while after my epidural but as I healed it healed and after about a week or so it was completely better. |

My back hurt so badly after I gave birth that I could barely get around without someone having to help me. That lasted only a couple of days thank goodness. I don't know if it was from my epidural or if I just had back labor and didn't realize it. |

My back was sore for a couple of days, but it wasn't even that noticeable. The burn from where I tore hurt more than the epidural mark. I guess everybody takes pain differently, and the epidural also isn't for everybody. ______________________ ~*Shana*~

My back was sore for a couple of weeks after birth, but I don't know if it was the epidural or not... it could've just been the contractions-- I had back labor. After a couple of weeks I never experienced any back pain. It's been 5 years since my last baby and my back has never hurt. |
