ok the straight forward answer is that you have a positive result for protein therefore it is 'elevated' or higher than normal. I'll try explain it but if I confuse you then just say and I will explain a bit more.
Our blood pressure helps our kidneys filter our blood of waste products... (a bit like sifting flour)...the waste products leave our body in urine...protein molecules are not waste and are too large to be filtered therefore we should not have it in our urine....however it is common for pregnant women to have traces of protein because their BP is higher... You have preeclampsia, so this means you BP is a LOT higher resulting in even higher amounts of protein being filtered by the kidneys and into the urine... this high BP puts a greater workload on your kidneys which is shown in the higher amount of protein detected. The doctors will be keeping an eye on this to ensure your kidneys do not become damaged so don't worry, they are doing a good job of looking after you. Hope that was easy to understand :~)

Thanks! U did a better job of explaing it then the nurse did here. She didnt wanna take the time to explain it at all. They said they didnt think my kidneys were working right but then they did blood work to see and all of the blood work and tests came back good. Is 300 mg a lot ?? because they said it was elevated but not by to much.. he just wanted to leave me in the hospital anyways to watch me.... and funny thing is my blood pressure has gone back to normal in the past two days... everytime they take it, it is never over 140/75... its actually been around 130/65 and sometimes its even 120 and lower lol. Idk im just ready to have her then i wont have to worry about this stuff.

300mg is about double the norm...the norm being that of someone not pregnant so being pregnant it would be above 150mg but not quite 300mg so along with the results from your bloods it seems your kidneys are coping with the raised BP well. Good to see your BP is better too, your protein may drop now and become normal after the birth...we're both on the verve of having our babies woohooo!!

Normal urine protein values in pregnancy are higher than in nonpregnant persons. While 300 would be double the expected amount in a non-pregnant woman, during pregnancy it is high but not extremely so. Your doctor is keeping you in the hospital because you have been diagnosed with several symptoms of PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension), and it is much safer to be where they can keep a very close watch on everything including blood pressure, swelling, proteinuria, etc, and can act quickly to keep you and your baby safe if things should get worse. I know it is hard to be away from home, but you do not have much longer to wait, and you should return to normal as soon as your baby arrives.Hang in there, and please keep us posted!
Nonpregnant values:
Urine Protein
24 hours
10-140 mg/24 hours
Spot Urine
1-14 mg/dL
Spot Urine Dipstick
"Negative"
Pregnancy values:
Urine Protein (Pregnancy)
24 hours
<300 mg/24 hours
Spot Urine
<30 mg/dL
Spot Urine Dipstick
"Negative" or "Trace"
"Serum proteins are normally extracted from urine prior to it being released from the kidney.
Because the renal glomeruli are imperfect, normal individuals may occasionally have "trace" amounts of protein in their urine. Larger amounts (1+ or more) are considered abnormal and may reflect an underlying kidney problem.
Urine protein can be measured on any urine sample (a "spot urine"), but the most accurate measure is with a 24-hour collection of urine.
During pregnancy, due to the increased renal blood flow, some additional protein may be lost in the urine. This increased protein loss should not normally be in quantities exceeding 300 mg in 24 hours. If more than 300 mg in 24 hours is found, this may signal the development of pre-eclampsia."
